Fall Burgess Arboretum Plant Sale on Oct 7 and Nov 4

We plan to have 2 Huge Plant sales to benefit the Burgess Arboretum on Thursday October 7 and on November 4th from 2pm to 6pm at the Waleska Farmers Market at Reinhardt University. The Farmers Market is located in the parking lot behind the Old Waleska Baptist Church at the corner of Highway 108 and 140. We plan to have some Seedlings of a Original Burgess Arboretum Japanese Maple tree, Snowball Bush Viburnums rooted from a Burgess Arboretum Viburnum brought to Reinhardt by Dr. Burgess from the National Arboretum in Washington D.C. The flowers in the spring are as big as a softball and a few Stewartia tree seedlings found in the Arboretum. All trees are $10 each and 100% of the funds go to benefit the Burgess Arboretum at Reinhardt University. Burgess Arboretum Recieves Historic landscape and Garden Grant from the Georgia Garden Club

Huge Positive News this week for the Burgess Arboretum. The Burgess Arboretum at Reinhardt University received a Historical landscape and Garden grant from the Georgia Garden Club to Plant additional Trees and shrubs to the Burgess Arboretum. The trees and shrubs will be original species of trees and shrubs that Dr. Burgess planted that have died due to construction and age across the Campus over the years. This Grant will be a huge help in restoring the Arboretum back to the vision Dr. Burgess Worked to achieve and improve the Beauty of Reinhardt University. We will have more details about this wonderful grant given to Reinhardt University soon.

Burgess Arboretum getting ready for spring 2010

I have not updated our blog since the fall. Many things are happening in the Burgess Arboretum at Reinhardt University in 2010. We have several Garden clubs scheduled to tour the arboretum this spring. We also are planning on working with the Master gardeners of Cherokee county this year on Re tagging all the trees in the arboretum with our brand new tree tag maker. The tag maker will allow us to create tags for trees across campus. On Thursday April 22 we will be celebrating Earth day at Reinhardt and we will be planting a Golden Weeping Willow Tree as our Burgess Arboretum tree #127 to celebrate 127 years of History at Reinhardt. We will be dedicating the tree to our Maintenance supervisor Tommy Mcburnett who passed away this winter. We also are working hard in planting over 260 American chestnut Trees in our Brand new Randall Porter American chestnut Orchard. It should be a exciting 2010 in the Burgess Arboretum. It is great to see the trees just starting to bloom this week. I will try to post updates on the arboretum monthly or if we get some exciting news about the arboretum.

Burgess Arboretum Fall Plant Sale this Wednesday and Thursday

The Fall Burgess Arboretum Plant sale will be this week. This Wednesday between 10am to 2pm in front of the Gordy center/Hasty student center lawn. On Thursday the plant sale will move to the Parking lot behind the Old waleska First baptist church parling lot at the corner of Highway 108 and 140. We plan to have pansies, tulip and daffodil bulbs, lavender, Japanese maple trees. Thyme and many more herbs and plants it should be a big day. 100% of the proceeds will go to benefit the Burgess Arboretum.

Grand Opening of Burgess Arboretum was Huge Success

We had a huge Grand opening of the Burgess Arboretum on October 3rd. It was a Beautiful
sunny day. We heard great talks from Paul Pugliese Cherokee county Extension agent and From Dr. Isherwood and Dr. Isherwood received a Proclamation From Cherokee County Board of Commissions Harry Johnston Declaring October 3rd Burgess Arboretum day in Cherokee County. It was a huge crowd of near 200 people and we were honored to have Dr. Burgess's children Martha Blanton Burgess and Jimmy Burgess help plant tree number 126 in our plant walk and we had a great plant walk thru the Arboretum. It was a huge success and thank you to everyone who helped make it such a great day.

Burgess Arboretum is Awarded Grant from Georgia Master Gardeners

Big news this morning the Georgia Master Gardeners association has awarded the Burgess Arboretum funding to support the 125 most noble trees and shrubs plant walk. This will help fund 125 plant labels in the Burgess Arboretum plant walk.

On Saturday October, 3, 2009. Behind the Burgess Administration Near the Shade garden at Reinhardt College in Waleska, Georgia We will be having the Grand opening of the Burgess Arboretum at 10am to noon. We will be planting a special tree in the 125 most noble trees and shrubs plant walk in the Burgess Arboretum. We will be giving away 25 Japanese maple trees from the Burgess Arboretum. Zach White will be giving a tour thru the most noble trees and shrubs plant walk in the Burgess Arboretum. We also will be having a great celebration and reopening of the Burgess Arboretum as a apart of our Fall Alumni day at Reinhardt College. It will begin at 10am and end around noon. 2009 Spring Burgess Arboretum plant sale was a success!!!!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Burgess Arboretum Plant sale. It was the biggest sale we have ever had at Reinhardt College. It was awesome. Thanks to all the Cherokee County Master gardeners who volunteered all three days with expert advice. We also planted a saucer magnolia after the sale for Earth day. Stay tuned for our Fall sale in October and we will be having the grand opening of the Burgess Arboretum the first Saturday in October. Mark your calender. We will be having a tree planting and tours of the arboretum. It will be a big day in the Burgess Arboretum.

Great Chestnut Planting and Burgess Index

Spring day American chestnut tree planting a success
We had a great week in the Burgess Arboretum. Thursday April 2nd we planted 18 American chestnut trees. It was awesome as soon as we planted them in the ground it started to rain which was great for the trees. We planted 6 pure American chestnut seeds and 12 cross seedlings which are a cross between a American and Chinese chestnut.

Burgess Arboretum Master index day with the Cherokee Master gardeners and Cherokee county extension service
On Friday We had our first Burgess arboretum index day we indexed all of section II in the Arboretum which is between Lawson building to Waleska United methodist church. We indexed many saucer magnolias, star magnolias and many redbuds. We then started indexing Section III around Lawson building which had almost 4 Dawn redwoods, Bald cypress and a Cucumber magnolia tree it was pretty awesome. We plan to have our next work day in early May.

American chestnut Trees to be planted in Burgess Arboretum

This winter Reinhardt college has gotten approval from the Georgia chapter of the American chestnut society to be a site as a test Orchard for the new American chestnut Tree. The Georgia chapter of the American chestnut society is working toward breeding a new American chestnut that can withstand the chestnut blight that killed nearly all the American chestnuts. We will be planting 6 pure American chestnut seedlings and 12 f1 cross seedlings this Thursday April 2nd at 2pm in the American Chestnut Orchard near the fincher building as a part of spring day. Stay tuned this October we will be dedicating the Orchard to a great friend of Reinhardt College who has a love of American chestnut trees. These trees will be a great addition to the Burgess Arboretum as we try to bring back a tree that was a gem to the north Georgia area.

Burgess Arboretum Sets Goals for 2009

We have set some Goals that we Plan to achieve for the Burgess Arboretum in 2009.

2009 Burgess Arboretum Goals
1 Index all sections of the Original Arboretum and Collect data
2 Build and Complete 125 most noble trees and shrubs in the Burgess Arboretum plant walk. Purchase and install labels before the first of October. Need to Raise around $4000 to purchase 125 plant labels with possibly stakes on a few of them Right now at $2387.
3 Have a great grand opening of the Arboretum in October and dedicate a tree at the Grand opening. Also at Grand opening have a campus plant walk thru the 125 most noble trees and shrubs plant walk.
4 Try to raise as much money as can for the arboretum so we can reach our Goals in 2009.
5 October or November have first plant walk thru Burgess Arboretum with nature Club/After school RM Moore Elementary school children.
6 Create a pamphlet on the Burgess Arboretum
7 Create a map of the 125 Most noble trees and shrubs plant walk-A number where each plant is located on map.

2008 a Great Year for The Burgess Arboretum

This year has been a great year for the Burgess Arboretum. We have had 3 very successful plant sales where we have raised over $2300 for the Burgess Arboretum. We had great support from the Master gardeners of Cherokee county and Paul pugliesee the Cherokee County Extension service. We had 2 very successful work days where we indexed section I and Section V in the Burgess Arboretum. We were featured twice in the Cherokee Tribune. We even got a front page cover article. We also got some great donations from donors to support the Burgess Arboretum. This Fall we planted a Princeton Elm tree in the Arboretum in Memory to one of our faculty members. This Blog has been a great tool for success for the Burgess Arboretum. 2008 was a great year for the Burgess Arboretum and we hope 2009 will be even better.
